先日初の来日を果たした世界屈指のディガー、ガスマスクでアフリカ各国を駆け回る男フランク・ゴスナーが、アフリカのオブスキュアな70sディスコ、ブギーをコンパイルした『LAGOS DISCO INFERNO』(2010年発表)にも彼女の楽曲が収録された。この堂々たる出で立ちを見よ。少し幼い歌声とは裏腹に魅せるシャウト。アフリカ・ファンが心から求めた幻の1枚が完全版としてBBEより復刻。LPは2枚組。

As the third instalment of our “Masters We Love” series, our crate-digging journey found the original producer Reindorf Oppong of one of what could possibly be one of the most ‘mysterious’ Afro-Disco records recorded in the late 70s; Nana Love’s “Disco Documentary – Full Of Funk”.

The original master tapes were un-covered [and luckily in great shape], then transferred and re-mastered to digital by legendary mastering house Masterpiece. In the process of going through the tapes, even un-released versions were discovered, which makes this a rather special package.

Afro-Disco is quite often lumped into the same category of infamous cheesiness that characterizes the genre for many and others…

Nana Love’s work, showcased here on this album, is a testament to the music’s most redeeming qualities: great musicianship, funky basslines and killer breaks. As a singer / songwriter in the leading role throughout, Nana Love [with production by Reindorf Oppong] lends a wonderfully balanced approach to the arrangements. The result is a set of tracks that are positioned carefully at the forward thinking crossroads of Disco, Boogie and Soul & Funk…

If the arrangements and tastefulness of a 12-piece studio band are ambitious in their execution, the lyrical content as well as compositions is grounded in the simplicity of having a good, dance-filled time.

Band members include 6 of the original Boney M guys as well as the legendary Harry Moso and was recorded in London in 1978, in the same studio as Boney M recorded alongside David Bowie. The tracks with the infectious grooves that drive them make them all perfectly suited for parties and any space with a dance-floor.

This album makes us think; would there ever have been a Studio 54 in Ghana in late 70s, these would have been the recordings that would have packed the dance floor with their deep root in Disco, Soul & Funk!
