50年代の初頭、ケントン楽団の主席編曲者として活躍したピート・ルゴロは独立後、歌手や映画音楽に作品を提供し、1956年にエマーシー・アンド・マーキュリーに移籍。この頃の作品は先に「Adventures In Sound」(FSR 2221)として復刻されました。ルゴロはその後も複数の楽器を大胆にフィーチャーした大作を次々に発表。これは、1957年から61年にかけて発表した4枚のアルバム、すなわち「Percussion at Work」(MG36122)、「Ten Trombones Like Two Pianos」（SRW16390)、「Ten Trumpets and Two Guitars」（PPS2016)、「Ten Saxphones and Two Basses」(PPS2023)を、２枚のCDにまとめたもの。当時の西海岸ジャズ・シーンを代表する名手を多数集め、ルゴロお得意の芸術性の高い実験的サウンドに挑戦。スケールの大きいオーケストラ・ジャズがお好きな方には見逃せない意欲作です。
