In the fifties, with Allen Ginsberg and William S Burroughs, JackKerouac was instrumental in starting the Beat movement. Theacknowledged leader and spokesman of the group, it was he who firstused the term Beat Generation to express despair over thesuppressed state of the individual in society and belief in the naturalworld and in the powers of the beat of jazz music and poetry. The Beats rejected the prevailing academic attitude to poetry anddeclared, through their art and attitudes, their alienation and disgustwith shallow American middle-class values. Ginsbergs Howl, andWilliam Burroughs Naked Lunch both became the focus of muchpublicisedobscenity trials and Kerouac s On The Road, became oneof the most controversial and best selling American novels of the 20thcentury.
Published in 1957, On The Road celebrates freedom fromconventional responsibilities, the emotional intensity of a life ofhitchhiking, casual sex and recreational drug use. The novel has soldnearly four million copies in America alone (still sells at a rate of200,000 a year) and has never been out of print. The Beats were centred around the bohemian artist colonies of NorthBeach (San Francisco), Venice West (Los Angeles) and GreenwichVillage (New York City). In addition to writing, the circle embracedJazz, Art and Film.
Combining words and music - including historic recordings of Kerouac,Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Ken Nordine and Lenny Bruce - BeatScene is a snapshot of the Beat panorama.
John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Scott Walker, The Byrds and Jim Morrisonwere amongst those to come under the spell of the aesthetic andrevolutionary spirits of beats as the foundations for the approachingseismic political and cultural revolutions of the sixties were laid.America and Canada, the most obvious export market for Beat Scene.
