ロンドンのモッズ・シーンで活動していたザ・ファイブ・プラウド・ウォーカーズを前身とするエルマー・ガントリーズ・ヴェルヴェット・オペラ。彼らはピンク・フロイドのツアーをサポートした後、サイケデリックへとシフト・チェンジ。1967年にリリースしたファースト・アルバム『ELMER GANTRY'S VELVET OPERA』は、同時期の英国サイケを代表する名作として現在も高い評価を得ています。デビュー・シングル"Flames"はレッド・ツェッペリンをはじめ様々なバンドにカヴァーされた英国サイケの人気曲。

本作は彼らのファースト・アルバムのモノ(プロモ・オンリー!)&ステレオ両ヴァージョン全曲に加え、1969年リリースのセカンド『RIDE A HUSTLER’S DREAM』、各種シングル音源、50分に及ぶBBCセッション音源(ほぼ初出)やデモ・テイクなどを加えたCD3枚組アンソロジーとなっています。

フロント・マンのエルマー・ガントリーと、ギタリストのコリン・フォースターはセカンドをリリースする前にバンドを脱退、エルマーはストレッチを結成。また、リズム隊のジョン・フォードとリチャード・ハドソンは1970年初頭にストローブスに加入、バンドは解散します。本作は長くはない活動期間に残された彼らの音源を総括した、正に決定版と言えるでしょう。
