ニック・ドレイクの瞑想的なフォークとクルビ・ダ・エスキーナの融合!
バーラ・デゼージョやアナ・フランゴ・エレトリコに続くリオデジャネイロの大型新人、ニコラス・ジェラルヂがデビューアルバムをリリース!

■ニコラス・ジェラルヂはブラジルのリオデジャネイロ出身、弱冠25歳のシンガー・ソングライターだ。幼い頃から音楽に親しみ、18歳の時に最初のバンド「Ente(エンチ)」を結成。担当はベースだったそうだ。しかし2022年、ニコラスはバンドを離脱。ソロ活動に専念することを決意した。本作『Em Outro Lugar do Céu』(2024)は、そんな彼の記念すべき1stソロアルバムだ。

■彼の音楽の特徴は、何といってもミナス音楽、特に1970から80年代にかけての「クルビ・ダ・エスキーナ」(「街角クラブ」という意味で、ミルトン・ナシメントを中心としたミナスの音楽ファミリーのこと)から大きな影響を受けている点だ。それもミルトン・ナシメントというよりは、ロー・ボルジェスやベト・ゲチス、フラヴィオ・ヴェントゥリーニといったよりロック色の濃いアーティストたちからの影響が大きい。讃美歌のような恍惚に満ちた歌声、ミナスらしいロマンチシズム、煌めくようなギターの音色、叙情的なメロディー...。どの楽曲も「クルビ・ダ・エスキーナ」への憧憬、愛情に満ちている。と同時に、ニコラスが心から敬愛するジョージ・ハリスンやニック・ドレイク、さらには世界共通のインディーヒーローであるマック・デマルコ、そしてリオデジャネイロの雄大な自然までもがインスピレーションとなっている。

■参加ミュージシャンも豪華で、ギリェルミ・リリオ(Gt./Producer)、セルジオ・マシャード(Dr.)、アルベルト・コンチネンチーノ(Ba.)、ドラ・モレレンバウム(Vo.)など、アナ・フランゴ・エレトリコやバーラ・デゼージョらの作品に携わってきた、現代ブラジル音楽シーンを支える面々が勢ぞろい。デビュー作にしては異例ともいえるこの布陣は、多くのミュージシャンが彼の類まれなる才能に賛辞を送っている証拠と言えるだろう。

■70-80年代にかけてのブラジル音楽から、チン・ベルナルデスやレオナルド・マルケスといった近年のブラジル発のオルタナティブ・ロック、さらにはジョージ・ハリスンやニック・ドレイクといったエバーグリーンな魅力を放つシンガー・ソングライター、そしてインディーロックのファンにまで推薦したい傑作!

In eleven tracks, Nicolas brings freshness to the Brazilian independent scene, opening up an interesting dialogue between today's Rio de Janeiro, where he lives, and the Minas Gerais music made in the 70s and 80s in Belo Horizonte, the much-loved Clube da Esquina movement.

‘My main influences certainly come from Clube da Esquina, their music touches me in a special way. But of course I also have many other references: Negro Leo, Nick Drake, Mac Demarco,’ Nicolas continues. ‘I often realise that some inspirations come naturally, often unconsciously. Listening to discs by artists I love makes me immerse myself in feelings that open my chest and deeply inspire me to create,’ he comments.

‘Em Outro Lugar Do Céu’ then manifests itself as a space to revisit this unique sound of ours, but now with more modern and contemporary production elements. ‘Guilherme Lírio's work changed everything on this disc. He brought different references from mine and I feel that this was very important for the record to sound more current too,’ Nicolas points out.

The album's producer, Guilherme Lírio, describes Nicolas' music as a well-balanced mix that takes a bit of everything. ‘I see it as a mixture of Clube da Esquina, Nick Drake and George Harrison,’ the producer adds. ‘Nicolas is 25 and this is his first album, with beautiful songs, lyrically focused on themes of meditation and self-exploration, recorded with a lot of love and talent.’

This idea of expansion that Nicolas conveys in the melodies inevitably emerges, because as well as being a musician, Nicolas is also a meditation instructor and psychologist. These activities complement his musical craft, revealing a creation rich in subjectivity. Added to this is the fact that much of the material for ‘Em Outro Lugar do Céu’ was created in a rural area of Rio de Janeiro. This landscape is also expressed throughout the album, through colourful songs and lyrics inspired by events in Nicolas' real life.

‘I can say that all the songs on my album really communicate something that happened in my life, something that I felt intensely and that overflowed in the form of music. For me, composing is a way of expressing the inexpressible, of transforming feeling into sound. That's why I say that releasing this album is a great exposure for me, as I'm not a very exposed person. Composing is a meditative experience for me and comes from a very genuine place, so it took a lot of internal work to decide to record it and put it out into the world,’ Nicolas reveals.
