■JOHN SANTOS 2011 NEW RELEASE■
La Esperanza (Hope) is our fourth full-length CD.
We offer it to you and to the world with the intention of adding our voices and our energy to the movement towards peace, love, justice and human rights around the globe. The Afro-Caribbean philosophy of honoring and respecting ancestors, descendents and the environment has withstood centuries of brutal colonial mentality. It is claiming an ever-growing and central position among an international community of all ages and backgrounds who recognize the holistic, organic power of music, dance, and drumming as a healing force in a world obsessed with materialism, war, hate and destruction.
The music presented here is firmly rooted in centuries-old African traditions that have informed generations of our history, spirituality, mythology and identity. Yet it has naturally evolved and continues to reflect contemporary social conditions from the perspective of marginalized communities while it informs modern Caribbean-based music such as Latin Jazz, Salsa, Timba and many others.
The Coro Folklórico Kindembo brings together artists and spirits of various generations and backgrounds, all united in our great love and respect for Afro-Cuban/Afro-Caribbean artistic expression. We are especially grateful for the participation of our several guest master musicians from New York, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Bay Area. A special Kindembo salute goes out to the highly respected elders on this project whose participation and encouragement mean the world to us. They are Conjunto Folklórico Nacional de Cuba founding member, Lázaro Galarraga, former Conjunto Folklórico Nacional de Cuba member Roberto Borrell, master tresero Nelson Gonzalez, and composer/rumbero extraodinaire, Raul de la Caridad Gonzalez Brito (Lali).
