Chris Farlowe was hailed as the new ‘in’ singer when Mick Jagger produced this superb album in 1966. Jagger was among many star vocalists who admired the Cockney lad with the powerful voice. Farlowe certainly had soul and a raucously powerful style. These assets are all exploited on an album promoted by fellow Farlowe enthusiast Andrew Loog Oldham and first released on the independent Immediate label. Farlowe delivers a selection of soul standards such as ‘What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted’ and ‘I’ve Been Loving You Too Long’, together with the Stones’ classic ‘Paint It Black’ and ‘Out Of Time’, a hit song Jagger and Richards wrote especially for Chris. Backed by an orchestra conducted and arranged by Art Greenslade, these are dynamic performances that show why Oldham and Jagger were so excited about their protege’s potential.
