On “”Iyab “” we meet the current state of development of Cuban jazz. On
it Julio Barreto and his quartet have developed and updated this musical
genre. Full of action, curiosity and inventiveness the artists have ventured
forward into hitherto unknown territories, creating new combinations of
sounds between Latin groove, fusion and electro-jazz. You’ve never heard
this form of Cuban jazz before!
Barreto’s quartet consists of Cuban instrumentalists who all left the sugar and
tobacco island for Europe. Percussionist and drummer Julio Barreto has set up
camp in Switzerland, trumpeter and keyboarder Carlos Puig, who composes
classical works and has made a name for himself with music commissioned for
theatre and cinema, lives on Tenerife. Guitarist Danz Martinez has now settled
in Italy. And bass player Manual Orza, who used to play guitar for the worldfamous
Jose Feliciano, has also settled in the “”boot peninsula””. For this CD,
these four naturalised Europeans were joined by American tenor and soprano
saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, the son of the unforgotten jazz couple Alice and
John Coltrane, who was full of enthusiasm after the recordings for “”Iyab “”:
“”That is great music with a great future, it’s the perfect mixture of Afro-Cuban
music, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul and bebop.”” How right he is!
The highlights of the CD include three cover versions; the classic “”Countdown””
by John Coltrane, for example, with an updated sound; the group underlies
Charlie Parker’s “”Donna Lee”” with raging Latin rhythms to create a new
version; and finally “”Third Stone From The Sun”” by Jimi Hendrix was
transformed into a Cuban jazz number which will sweep you along.
