Vinicius de Moraes, Rio de Janeiro born poet and diplomat (worked for the Brazilian Foreign Ministry in North America, France and Uruguay). A truly singular figure in his nation's culture.
In 1954 he wrote the play Orfeu da Conceição , which was soon adapted by French director Marcel Camus into the film, Black Orpheus, a controversial, but enormously popular movie which impressed early 1960s audiences with its beautiful soundtrack and panoramic technicolor views of Rio de Janeiro.
Throughout the sixties, Vinicius is at the centre of Bohemian Rio, collaborating with Carlos Lyra, Nara Leao, Quarteto em Cy and, most famously, Antonio Carlos Jobim with whom he composes the anthems of Bossa Nova, Chega de Saudade (No More Blues) and Gorota de Ipanema (The Girl from Ipanema), huge hits for Joao and Astrud Gilberto, respectively, the latter one of the biggest selling compositions of all time.
One of the principal architects of Bossa Nova, in 1966 Vinicius diversified into African samba in a collaboration with the renowned Brazilian guitarist, Baden Powell, the result is the magnificent Os Afro Sambas. This acclaimed album is also available on El Records.
Modernism and Bossa Nova comprises all of the music for Orfeu da Conceição, everything Vinicius contributed to Black Orpheus and historic recordings of his standards performed by such greats as Joao Gilberto, Carlos Lyra, Sylvia Telles, Agostino Dos Santos, Alaide Costa and Pery
Ribeiro, who contributes the first ever recorded version of The Girl from Ipanema, the song which would propel bossa nova into a galactic phenomenon.
