こうしてロックは誕生した。エルヴィス・プレスリー、伝説のサン・レコード時代の音源集エルヴィス・プレスリーの没40周年記念としてリリースされる今作は、RCAメジャー・デビュー前のもっとも初期のエルヴィスの録音を最も包括的に網羅しており、多くの曲は今回初めて正規市販として入手可能になる。また新たに発見された「忘れじの人」のライヴ録音(1955年10月29日、ルイジアナ州シュリーヴポートのルイジアナ・ヘイライド公演より)が初めて正規発売される。
この時代のエルヴィスの音源は彼がポップ・ミュージックやカルチャーに与えた爆発的な影響を理解し評価するための必携のアイテムであり、世界初の爆発的な人気を博したシンガーがそのキャリア初期に、ブルース、ポップ、ヒルビリー・カントリー・スウィングを融合させ、世界を変える電撃的な新しい音楽を生み出した当時の音源を全曲、できる限り最高の品質のサウンドで聴くことができる。
DISC1はエルヴィスがサン・レコーズ在籍中に録音したマスター、いくつかの別バージョンに加えて、単独のコレクションとしては初めて、エルヴィスがサンと契約する前に自費で録音した、伝説のメンフィス・レコーディング・サービスのアセテート盤4曲(「マイ・ハピネス」/「心のうずく時」[1953年7月録音]と「アイル・ネヴァー・スタンド・イン・ユア・ウェイ」/「イット・ウドゥント・ビー・ザ・セイム・ウィズアウト・ユー」[1954年1月4日録音])も収録されている。DISC-2は知られている曲のアウトテイクが、現存するごく短い断片までもすべて収録されている。DISC-3は、存在が知られているライヴおよびラジオ録音がすべて収録されている。
また、本作にはエルヴィスのキャリア初期の起源を事実、秘話、グッズ、そして多くの写真によって時系列で追う、図版入りの旅行記兼手帳の形を取った、120ページの豪華ブックレットも同梱される。この比類なきアメリカの英雄物語は、プロとして初めてのレコーディング・セッションを24時間以内に控えた1954年の独立記念日(7月4日)に始まり、1955年12月、サン・レコーズを離れRCAに移籍する直前までが描かれている。素材は日付順にまとめられている。1954年7月から10月にかけては、カレンダーの大半が空欄になっているが、これはエルヴィスが昼間クラウン電気会社という小さな会社で働いていたため、音楽制作が週末や夜間に集中していたからである。これはエルヴィス・プレスリーが世界的に有名になる前の姿であり、この素晴らしい若者がスターダムにのし上がり、前代未聞の絶頂期を享受する前の姿を説明している。さらに、制作にあたっては、1,500時間以上もの復元作業や、200時間近くもの新たなスタジオ作業により素材の丹精込めたリマスタリングが施されており、その結果は目を見張るものがある。今回のプロジェクトはエルヴィスの世界的権威であるエルンスト・ミカエル・ヨルゲンセンがプロデュース、リサーチ、執筆を手がけている。
