No stronger three of a kind ever existed than the three Kings of the blues, B.B., Albert, and Freddie King. Related not by blood but by the heart and soul of the blues and each with their own unique style, they collectively innovated much of the modern day blues guitar lexicon. On this Blues Bureau Collection, legendary guitar master Rick Derringer proves more than worthy as he puts his personal stamp on these classic blues tunes, previously recorded by “The Three Kings Of The Blues,” as well as the inspired nine minute “Additional” track. Derringer first gained popularity in the McCoys with the chart topping tune “Hang On Sloopy” in 1965. In the following two decades, Derringer was the featured sideman for both the Winter Brothers, Johnny and Edgar as well as a very successful solo artist (“Rock & Roll Hootchie Koo”). The Blues Bureau International release, “Back To The Blues”(BB2008-2) in 1993 marked Derringer’s triumphant return to what he does best: hard-edged rocking blues, fueled by Derringer’s gutsy vocals and phenomenal guitar work. Three more blues oriented releases on the Blues Bureau label followed, “Electra Blues” (BB2023-2), “Blues Deluxe (BB2039-2) and “Jackhammer Blues” (BB 2043-2) which stayed true to Derringer’s rockin’ blues tradition, running the gamut from grinding slow blues to smoldering shuffles. Rick Derringer’s “The Three Kings Of The Blues” contains many of the artist’s greatest Blues Bureau performances and is among the definitive showcases of Derringer’s extraordinary guitar ability, played with an intensity and prowess that reveals both his deep blues roots and his mastery of the blues guitar. A consummate vocalist and guitarist, fans will be happy to hear their hero on top of his game as he delivers one riveting classic blues tune after another.
