THE EXCEPTIONの名で1968年にシングルをリリースし、その後、バンド名をAORTAと変えて、1969年に発表したアルバムが本作。 ポップ・センスあふれる楽曲をテープ・コラージュによるサウンド・エフェクトで繋ぎ、ストリングスやホーンも大胆に導入した一大叙事詩的なアルバムです。シカゴ出身ながらサージェント・シンドロームの影響もブレンドされた英国的アプローチが見事にハマっていて、得難い個性をモノにしています。 ありそうでなかなかお目にかかれない、アイディアたっぷりのハイ・クオリティのアート・ロックの傑作としてオススメです。

As the Exception, this quartet were one of Chicago's top mid-60s bands. In 1968 they shook up their personnel, changed their name to Aorta and embraced psychedelia, issuing their debut album the following spring. An ambitious psychedelic suite, it alternates between mellow and heavier sounds, with some intense fuzz guitar and sound effects, and stands as one of the best major label psych LPs of the late 1960s.
