Hearing again the voice of Malouma Mint Me?dah, prestigious heiress of an artist family originating from the south-west ofMauritania, is a delight. This woman of convictions shook up the musical landscape of her country at the end of the 80’s,challenging conservatives and tackling social issues. Her perfect mastery of ancient vocal art as well as her taste forsounds coming from other horizons have made her an icon in her home country.
She started as a songwriter for otherartists before she sang reconciliation between communities and national unity in 1992. She finally rose to worldwide famewith her album Dunya (on the Marabi label).Elected member of the Mauritanian Senate in 2007, she is now willing to separate politics from her artistic career.Strengthening her commitment towards Mauritanian culture, she created her own foundation.
She is also involved inenvironmental issues, becoming a goodwill ambassadress of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Her fourth internationally released album Knou marks a sensational come back. All the compositions on Knou bearMalouma’s mark and the diversity of her inspiration. From soul music to traditional songs, each track is a painting of newharmonies, revealing its nuances at each listening. Drawn up during three years, Knou asserts itself as an accomplishedmasterpiece.
