A Side ‘Hookuo - Magician feat.JUE
A track from the project album of legendary producer Yoo Seung-Yeop, who left a rich legacy of funky grooves throughout the 1970s and 80s. At a time when synthesizers were still unfamiliar in Korea, he showcased a series of sophisticated and pioneering sounds.
Among Korean record collectors, this song is regarded as a hidden gem — a rare and brilliant Korean funk-disco track.
Captivated by its infectious funk groove, the instrumental break in the middle, and the striking lyric “I am the magician who gives love, Sabaha,” we decided to remake this track. The new version was completed by sampling the original drum break, adding Hookuo’s vintage synthesizer performance, bassist Lee Sang-Yoon’s groove, and Jue’s mature vocals.

B Side: Hookuo - Dok Dak Disco
This track is from the second album of Kim Trio, a sibling band that represents Korea’s fusion groove scene, and was released in 1983 as a fantastic boogie-funk song. Dok Dak Dok Dak stands out with its clock-like, repetitive rhythm, combining elements of funk and disco, and features particularly shining bass lines. It is a beloved fusion groove track among collectors in Korea.
The original track’s off-beat drum fills and complex measures have been adapted into rhythm edits and drum break samples for DJs. The track is further enriched by bassist Lee Sang-yoon’s tight bass touches, Hookuo’s funky guitar riffs, and the prominent lead sounds of synthesizer performances.
