HEADLESS (JPN/PUNK) / THE LOST YEARS 1984-1986 / CD

1983. Four junior high school kids who met at live houses in the early days of hardcore formed HEADLESS. In 1984, they released a record, making them one of the youngest bands in Japanese hardcore history to do so. Some 40 years later, this archival release brings together their 1983-1986 recordings and documentation for the first time.

There are some truly obsessive collectors out there, and Japanese hardcore has seen its share of reappraisals and reissues. Even so, every now and then you come across a band and think, “How has nobody touched this until now?” One of them is HEADLESS, the legendary hardcore band formed in junior high by TAKESHI, still active today in ROCKY&TheSWEDEN, and his bandmates. Many will know their only release, a flexi disc, but beyond that almost nothing was known about them. Yet the live records uncovered for this release show them sharing stages with the leading bands of the day, including LIP CREAM, GHOUL, GAUZE, and SYSTEMATIC DEATH, and playing Shodoku GIG and the DYNAMITE TOUR. It’s hard to believe this was the work of junior high and high school kids.

This release collects 16 tracks: every song from the flexi disc, plus rehearsal and live recordings that include many songs never featured on it. Among them is material that was meant to come out on HOLD UP and DYNAMITE RECORDS. The booklet is packed with a complete record of HEADLESS’s live shows, rare flyers, and photos of the members. A new page that fills in the history of Japanese hardcore make sure you pick it up.
