They are definitively wrong. The blues had its roots in other forms of older black music that are traced to the music of West Africa. In that sense, Mali music constitutes the DNA of the blues and the griots can be identified as the direct ancestors of the rural bluesmen. Baba Sissoko is from Mali and he is the last undisputed griot alive. His voice evokes the lost vibe of the deepest and wildest side of West Africa; a magic land that he has largely crossed since his childhood singing and playing with his legendary grandfather, Djeli Baba Sissoko. With the help of the soulful voices of Djeli Mah Damba Koroba and Djana Sissoko, respectively his mother and his young daughter, he recorded “Three Gees”. They are the voices of the past, the present and the future living in the twilight zone where the Malian roots blooms into a new sound of hope and happiness. Also involved are Fernando "Bugaloo" Velez (The Dap-kings, Antibalas) on percussion, and the legendary Corey Harris on slide guitar. Somebody has coined the sound Bambara Mystic Soul, we dig it and really hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as we have enjoyed making it. Recorded and mixed by Luca Sapio and mastered by the Grammy winner Brian Lucey.

Born in Mali in 1963, Baba Sissoko is a percussionist and vocalist who began playing the talking drums (tamani) during his childhood, as a member of the griot caste of Mali. The griots are the ancient caste of Malian storytellers and oral historians whose job it is guard and preserve the collective memory of their people using the oral tradition. African Griot Groove is the quintessence of this cultural background, and a virtuoso and passionate excursion into the roots of a musical language that is centuries old. However, while Sissoko (who now lives in Italy) pays homage to his roots, he is also interested in musical exploration and this is definitely the task at hand for Sissoko and the four musicians who join him on this album. Here Sissoko—while singing and playing traditional instruments like the tamani and ngoni—is joined by Erick Yanou on electric bass, Philippe Lago on a traditional drumkit, Abu Djigo on electric guitar and Reynaldo Hernandez on congas and batar for a fusion of traditional and modern sounds.
