Freda is a household name mainly because of the world wide smash Band Of Gold from 1970 on Invictus which hit # 1 in the UK and # 3 on the US Pop Charts. There were also two other (minor) hits Deeper And Deeper and Cherish also on Invictus and these 45s and other fine repertoire has been extensively re-issued and re-promoted over the years.
So what have we here then from Poker?! Well we are proud to present a long-lost album from 1966 that Freda cut for MGM with the fabled Tom Wilson (a la Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel et al) Gawd knows why it wasn t massive at the time, but I guess Freda was simply ahead of the curve. As is often the case the album garnered belated respect as several cuts from this LP picked up spins from several Northern Soul DJs. The most notable being On Easy Street which was a monster for Keb Darge at Stafford s Top Of The World.
The opening infectious riff of track one will be familiar to any selfrespecting hipster, as it was utilised (virtually on a permanent loop) by J-Walk with their massive club anthem 'Soul Vibration' from the early part of this decade.
Here s a piece of pop trivia for all you folks who take a keen interest in these sort of things (most of us I imagine!): The word is that Berry Gordy was keen to place Freda with his expanding Detroit empire and actually cut Freda s first recordings. However, Freda declined to join Motown and decided to go it alone instead No Payne No Gain! (I'll get my coat)
