“After the highly successful CD “TANGA” (Timba 59789TR) “My Time Is
Now” was the second production with the legendary inventor of Latin Jazz.
Mario Bauz was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1911 and initially learned the
clarinet. In 1926 he went to New York to record some Cuban “danzones”.
However, his artistic career changed direction radically when he turned his
attention to jazz.
Subsequently he performed with the big band of drummer Chick Webb, one
of the hottest musicians from the swing era, and within a year he had become
ist musical director. While he was still working with Webb he introduced him
to a young female singer who had just won an award at an amateur contest in
Harlem: Ella Fitzgerald. That was Ella’s first break. Bauza stayed with Webb
until 1938 and then played with Don Reedman and Fletcher Henderson before
joining Cab Calloway’s Band in 1939. Cab then began using Cuban rhythms, as
we can hear on “Rhapsody In Rumba” and “Goin’ Conga”.
