アメリカのジュエラーでありグリルズの祖と呼ばれるエディ・プレイン(Eddie Plein)の作品集。「マウス・フル・オブ・ゴールズ(Mouth Full Of Golds)」ー 金冠、金の前歯、粗金、グリルズ ーさらには、ダイヤモンドや真珠まで、「かの有名な」作者とその彩られた歯(そしてヒップホップの顔となったあの偉大なる笑顔)を写真とともに紐解くヒストリー・ブックである。2021年に自費出版として400部発行され瞬く間に完売した初版を、2023年にイギリスの出版社「IDEA」が第二版として再版。本書は、2026年公開予定の長編ドキュメンタリー映画『MOUTH FULL OF GOLD』の発表に伴い再刊行された。ドキュメンタリー映画は2026年2月から7月にかけて世界中で「シークレット・スクリーニング」として上映されており、一般公開は夏以降を予定。限定された劇場と一部のオンラインプラットフォームで配信される。手に取りやすいサイズとソフトカバー仕様への変更、またカバー写真のリニューアルと帯の付属での装いを新たにし、加えて、グリルズを中心としたジュエリーをオーダーメイドで制作、販売する東京のショップ「GRILLZ JEWELZ」がページに加わっている。この物語は、「かの有名な(‘Famous’)」エディ・プレイン、その人生と仕事、自身が先駆者となった装飾としての歯科学の黄金時代、そしてヒップホップの顔ともなったあの不朽の笑顔を描く。本書は、ケビン・ジョーンズ(Kevin Jones)、80年代後半からグリルズを記録してきた映画監督兼作家であるライル・リンドグレン(Lyle Lindgren)そしてその友人たちのアイデアから生まれた。彼らはインタビューを行い、写真を入手し、事実検証を行い、デザインやアートディレクションを手がけ、2021年に刊行を実現した。アトランタの「フェイマス・エディーズ・ゴールド・ティース(Famous Eddie’s Gold Teeth)」の看板の前で撮られた一枚、当時のヒップホップ界の功労者は皆揃って客であった、NYを拠点に活動するグラフィティアーティスト「シャツキングフェイド(Shirt King Phade)」とドーン(Dawn)が写る一枚、ギャビー・イーラン・ジュエリー(Gabby Elan Jewelry)によるデザインが施されたグリルズ「Exotica」、タイラー・ザ・クリエイター(Tyler, The Creator)の下歯、本書の至る所に現れる「この世の奇才」ナズ(Nas)とケリス(Kelis)が写る一枚。これらのイメージで語る視覚的情報、テキストで綴られる鮮やかな物語など、本書にはその世界のすべてが揃っている。序文はニューヨーク出身のラッパーであるエイサップ・ファーグ(A$AP Ferg)が手がけており、作者の個人史と、ブラック・クリエイティブ・カルチャーの文脈の中でゴールドとグリルズを位置付けている。あわせて、ミュージックビデオ・ディレクターのヴァシュティ(Va$htie)、音楽プロデューサーでありDJのゴールディー(Goldie)、ラッパーであり音楽プロデューサーのエイサップ・ロッキー(A$AP Rocky)、ラッパーのジャスト・アイス(Just-Ice)、フォトグラファーのジャネット・ベックマン(Janette Beckman)、ファッションデザイナーのマーク・ジェイコブス (Marc Jacobs)がそれぞれのストーリーを語っている。The new IDEA book is the (Re)Edition of Mouth Full Of Golds, written by director Lyle Lindgren and Eddie Plein. Also telling their own stories are, amongst many others, Va$htie, Goldie, A$AP Rocky, Just-Ice, Janette Beckman, Marc Jacobs, and, new for this (Re)Edition, Grillz Jewels from Tokyo.The book is part of a larger project, a documentary in the works by Lyle who explains:“I was making graffiti films for Goldie in the Bronx one summer, getting moulds taken for my grills in the lobby of our hotel — he didn’t like the fit of my vampire fangs and casually mentioned he used to live with the guy whose brother invented gold fronts. So we took a gypsy cab to Brooklyn and met Eddie in the basement where it all began, he told me this Keyser Söze style forgotten story that seemed too good to be true — so I started digging and amassed this mountain of footage and interviews that became the film. When COVID happened I was worried that Eddie’s legacy would be reduced to a pitch document and a 3 minute teaser trailer; so I took all of the work that we’d done and decided to make this book.”There are so many great quotes from Eddie in his text for the book. We like this story from back when he was blowing up big in Queens:“The work ethic that we had at the shop was on another level. Whatever crazy idea you had for your fronts, we’d make it happen, and we’d heard it all. For instance, one time a customer came in saying, ‘There’s someone who wanna get some teeth from you, but you have to go to them in the hospital and they want five gold gingerbread men on their fronts.’ Somebody in the booth had to draw me a picture of a cookie so I could figure out if I could actually wax up what they wanted. So I sent one of my workers, Andy, to Jamaica Hospital, and the guy he was there to meet was about to have brain surgery. When he walked into the room to take the mold, it was Kool G Rap sitting in the hospital bed. This was before the Road to the Riches album with DJ Polo was released. And so we took the mold and put ’em together. Five gingerbread men teeth, it wasn’t a problem. If the money’s there, we’re making it happen.”MARC JACOBS:“I’ve always had this kind of fetish, in a weird way. I love it when somebody has a gold tooth, or when they have a chipped tooth, or a broken nose. There’s just something that I’ve always found very alluring and very sexy about that.”VA$HTIE:“I was sort of laughed at, but in a fun way. People—my friends included—thought my style was weird and funny, and as a woman, wearing gold fronts was kind of strange. But I was already so used to being different in that way that it didn’t matter to me. It was something that I wanted to emulate and my style has always been both masculine and feminine.”A$AP ROCKY:“Eventually I wanna get all my teeth taken out and replaced with all platinum and just precious stones like Michèle Lamy. Imma hang up that pretty boy shit and be slugging out to the finish.”SHIRT KING PHADE:“Ed was the first guy to brand his teeth. It was like if you were buying a pair of Jordans but you were getting a set of Eddie’s gold caps. From De La Soul to Flavor Flav, I think everybody in Long Island had fronts. Run-DMC probably never wore them but they went out to Eddie’s to get them. Nobody else was servicing stars, up and coming people, and all the dealers too. Eddie took care of everyone, and then boom, you’re ready to go out into the world and rep New York.”The feature length documentary is currently popping up across the globe as Secret Screenings from February to July.
