The Manganiyar Seduction is a live album and stage extravaganza,conceived and directed by Roysten Abel, featuring Rajasthani folk and Sufi music, with over 40 musicians from the Manganiyar community of western India. From obscure villages around Jaisalmer and Jodhpur and Barmer in western Rajasthan, comes a musical tradition that has digested and belted out melodies from everywhere between Persia and the Punjab for several centuries. Padma Shri Sakar Khan (1938-2013), from the village of Hamira in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district, was one of the great folk musicians of India. His instrument - the ‘kamancha’ (or kamaicha, kamaycha, kemancheh) - traces its roots back to the 8th century. A bowed lute with a goat skin sound box and three main gut strings with 14 sympathetic metal strings, it harks back to the lost bowed Raba'ab of Arabia, and perhaps further, in terms of both geography and time.Accompanying him on this album are his sons Ghewar, Firoze and Dara. In 2012 Khan was awarded the Padma Shri, India's highest civilian award, for his contribution to music. He has played alongside Yehudu Menuhin and George Harrison, and toured Europe and the USA in the 1970s and 80s, yet this is his debut, and only, album. Sakar Khan passed away in August 2013. His sons, highly accomplished musicians who learnt from their father, will now carry his legacy forward.

Lakha Khan, 67 is a sarangi player and vocalist, and perhaps the greatest exponent of the sindhi sarangi. Today, Lakha Khan is one of the last remaining Manganiyars to have mastered this complex instrument and to carry forward the centuries-old musical tradition of Rajasthani folk and Sufi music. He has performed extensively across Rajasthan and India, and internationally in the U.S., Europe and Japan including the Festival of India in the U.S.S.R., the Edinburgh Folk Music Festival and the Amarrass Desert Music Festival.A living legend, Lakha Khan is not only a virtuoso on the sarangi, he sings fluently in Sindhi, Punjabi, Hindi, Marwari and a variety of dialects, his knowledge and skill spanning the divide between folk and classical music. He confesses "classical always remains in control while we, who have learnt on our own, ta take liberties. At times we go out of tune but at times we discover something new as well.” Lakha Khan was awarded the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academi award for his contribution to Rajasthani folk music in 2008. He has also been recognized by the Marudhara Foundation in Kolkata, India. This incredible musician has also featured in The New York Times, BBC (Radio 3, The Strand), NPR, Hindustan Times and The Indian Express. He is accompanied by his son Dane Khan on the dholak (double headed Indian drum.

Barmer Boys represent the next generation of folk from India. Folk with attitude. 21st Century folk. Their music is a harmonic blend of distinct performance styles and personalities, and melds Sufi, qawwali and folk traditions of the Indian sub-continent.The Barmer Boys are led by Mangey Khan (vocals, harmonium) with the twin percussive punch of Rais Khan (morchang, bhapang, beat-boxing), Magda Khan (dholak). Barely in their 30’s, and yet seasoned performers, they carry forward the centuries-old musical tradition of the Manganiyars and are leading examples of Rajasthani folk and Sufi music. The group formed in 2011, and has performed with a host of world renowned artists including Vieux Farka Toure, Bombino, BaBa ZuLa, Mamadou Diabate, Rupa and the April Fishes, and UK’s Jason Singh/Dharohar Project. They haveperformed at the Amarrass Desert Music Festival, Escape Festival, Bhakti Samaroh and more.
