No lessons required, just a natural aptitude, he was almost without peer in the world of country during the 1950s and 1960s and the album title Fire On The Strings ismore than just hyperbole. He was most renowned for playing a double neck Mosrite guitar and can lay claim to being perhaps the first musician to use this instrument. His 1953 hit 'Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud, Loud Music)'; thiswould subsequently be covered by Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers, on the 1976 compilation 'SleeplessNights'. He began to get calls for rock n roll session work and developed a style that combined clean precision with lightning speed and in this respect he was to be a major inspiration for players such as Eddie Cochran and Cliff Gallup. In 1957, Maphis released perhaps hismost iconic album, 'Fire On The Strings'. It was the perfect showcase for his many talents, allowing him to slam through such songs as 'Guitar Rock And Roll', 'Bully Of The Town' and 'Flying Fingers', with fingers a seeming blur, while never allowing pure speed and technique to overtake his core sense of feel.
