He was most renowned for playing a double neck Mosrite guitar and can lay claim to being perhaps the first musician to use this instrument. His 1953 hit 'Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud, Loud Music)'; thiswould subsequently be covered by Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers, on the 1976 compilation 'SleeplessNights'. In 1957, Maphis released perhaps hismost iconic album, 'Fire On The Strings'. By the 1940s a few female singers emerged but most fell into the cowboy sweetheart persona like Patsy Montana and Dale Evans. By the 1950s however things were beginning to change. DEAD MAN The band was started by Texas singer and guitarist Ray Benson with Lucky Oceans in 1969 and they ve been swinging ever since. This is their first Epic album. On the surface Asleep At The Wheel are a major mainstream country band. Nine Grammy Awards, plus 11 albums and 17 singles which have made the Top 100 country charts in the States. Yet they started out takingmusical risks, mainstay Ray Benson says ....we were really a rootsy band . They benefited from the fact that these were times when anything was possible, the music business was still in its infancy and musicians were encouraged to take risks, there were no rules, you made it up as you went along. They released their first album in 1973 on United Artists, having been signed by Andrew Lauder. Although it didn t chart it did enough to convince people that there was something special about the band but a change of personnel at the label led to them being dropped. However this disappointment was offset by EPIC picking them up for this their self titled album. Released in 1974, this was to move them further forward with the success of the Louis Jordan cover Choo Choo Ch Boogie , which charted on the country charts and gave them a wider audience. Asleep At The Wheel are now an institution but when this album was recorded they were young pioneers, leading the way into a fresh direction that took inspiration from the past, merging it with an approach that was definitely state of the art. From his Sun sessions came Blue Suede Shoes which reached the top of all the charts and became Sun Records first million seller. He was involved in a serious car crash on his way to a national TV show which put him and his brother in hospital and nearly ended his career. His 1964 UK Tour saw him greeted as a conquering hero, playing to sold out houses and being particularly lauded by a young group called the Beatles, who played and recorded a number of his songs. Whole Lotta Shakin was recorded on June 3rd and 4th 1958 and On Top in 1969. Among the real highlights are Champagne Illinoise a collaboration between Perkins and Bob Dylan and Perkins powerful and touching Power Of My Soul . Carl Perkins was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in mid 1980 s and died in 1998. Never really a group in the sense of the Beat les, Stones or The Byrds that is they didn t really function as a group, they had slightly more in common with the The Monkees, or more correctly, perhaps the original Grass Roots, in the sense that The Freak Scene was whatever its producer-songwriter had in mind.The Freak Scene was a studio created ensemble, the brain child of Rusty Evans, a one time Greenwich Village folkie turned producer. Evans had crossed paths with Bob Dylan and Felix Pappalardi early in his career, before they went their separate ways and he ultimately became a producer and dreamed up The Freak Scene project. David Bromberg was the first musician tapped for the group , a sort of in-house psychedelic band created to record one album, Psychedelic Psoul. This one album to their credit is a period piece, an effort at making topical psychedelic music at a time when Columbia had nobody (other than The Byrds and in his own way, Dylan), who was really good at making those sounds. He soloed in the local church choir at the age of seven. During his early boyhood he often performed at local singing and community gatherings. His professional career began in 1939 when he first performed on a radio station in Roanoke, Virginia. In 1944, Lester came to the Grand Ole Op ry in Nashville, Tennessee as a featured vocalist and guitarist. The Skill and sincerity with which he sings make him an outstanding performer in any number he undertakes, whether it is ballads, blues or hymns. Earl Scruggs was also born into a musically inclined family. Earl s father, who died when Earl was only four years old, was also a banjoist. Inspired by his father, Earl managed to play tunes on his banjo before he was five years old. At the age of ten, he developed a unique style of playing the banjo with three fingers which is known nationally as Scruggs-Style Picking. In 1945, when he first came to Nashville, he dazzled audiences with this new, harddriving, three-fingered technique. It was this artistry that gave life to a band style called Bluegrass. One music critic has compared Scruggs-Style Picking to Paganini s dazzling violin style. They formed the Foggy Mountain Boys and brought bluegrass to international prominence.
