ボブ・ディランのブートレッグ・シリーズ第18集『The Bootleg Series Vol. 18: Through The Open Window, 1956-1963』(スルー・ザ・オープン・ウィンドウ 1956-1963)。どのようにしてボブ・ディランになっていったかを貴重音源で綴るドキュメント。名もなき者だったロバート少年が故郷であるミネソタで録音した1956年のプライベート音源から1963年のカーネギーホールに至るまでをまとめた始まりの物語。ロックンロールに夢中だった少年がやがてウディ・ガスリーを知る事になり音楽表現と創造の幅を広げ、どのようにしてボブ・ディランになっていったかを伝えるドキュメンタリーでもある。

本作のデラックス・エディションはデビュー前から第三作『時代は変る』発表前後までの時代を時系列で追ったCD8枚組の豪華ボックス・セット。すべて新しいテープをマスターに、レアおよび未発表の自宅録音、スタジオでのアウトテイク、コーヒーハウス&ナイトクラブでのライヴ録音などを含む。ブートレッグ第18集の目玉はディランの転機となった、1963年10月26日開催カーネギーホールでの未発表完全収録音源で、オリジナル・テープからのミックスとなる。CD8枚には48曲の未発表演奏と38曲の極めてレアな録音を含む139トラックを収め、ショーン・ウィレンツの長文ライナーノーツと100枚以上の珍しい写真をまとめたハードカバーの本も同梱される。

『スルー・ザ・オープン・ウィンドウ』は1960年代初め、ミネソタから自由奔放なグリニッジ・ヴィレッジに拠点を移し、ソングライターとしてパフォーマーとして頭角を現し成熟していくボブ・ディランを物語る。2025年公開、ティモシー・シャラメ主演映画『名もなき者』で描かれ話題になった時代だ。ディランへの評価が世界的に再燃する中で登場するこのコレクションには、コロンビア・レコーズに残したアウトテイクや、クラブでの演奏、小規模で私的な集まり、友人のアパート、そして既に故人となってしまったミュージシャンたちとの交流がきっかけとなったジャム・セッション、といった多種多様な場面で生まれた、レアな歌の数々を収録。録音の多くは極めて珍しいもので、中にはこれまでいかなる形でも発表されなかったものもある。『スルー・ザ・オープン・ウィンドウ』は、才能を磨き上げ、伝統的なフォークソングや歌詞のスケッチを「風に吹かれて」や「時代は変る」といった、彼の最高傑作であり、最も不朽の名曲へと昇華させたディランの初期の時代を、他に類を見ない形で記録した作品です。最後は、1963年10月26日にカーネギーホールで行われたディランの画期的なコンサートの未発表音源を完全収録。近年のライヴではみられないステージでの語りも大変魅力な録音になっている。ディランの類まれな若さで成功を収めたこのコンサートは、同時に彼の長いキャリアの始まりの終焉をも象徴するものでした。
