◆時代や地域を超えて多くの音楽リスナー、ミュージシャンから変わらぬ共感と尊敬を集めるシンガー・ソング・ライター、ジョニ・ミッチェル。数多のソングライターが愛し、憧れたアーティストである彼女の偉大なるキャリアを、貴重な未発表音源とともに俯瞰する壮大なプロジェクト、”ジョニ・ミッチェル・アーカイヴ・シリーズ”。2020年にリリースされた第一弾作品は、グラミー賞最優秀ヒストリカル・アルバムを受賞、その後2021年には彼女のReprise Records期のアーカイヴ音源をまとめ上げた第二弾作品を、そして2023年にはAsylum Records期前半のアーカイヴ音源を編纂した第三弾作品を発表してきた彼女から、待望のシリーズ最新作となる第四弾作品、『JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES VOL.4: THE ASYLUM YEARS (1976-1980)』が登場する!

◆70年代後半を通して、ジョニ・ミッチェルは大胆かつ自由なジャズへの探求心とともに、創造的な新境地を開拓し続けていった。それまでと同じ道を歩むのではなく、他に類を見ない唯一無二のフォーク・フュージョンというスタイルを構築しながら、自身の音楽的挑戦を推し進めていったのだ。他の追随を許さないサウンドの頂点へと昇っていった彼女は、ゴールド・ディスクを獲得する『HEJIRA』(1976年)、同じくゴールド・ディスクを獲得する2枚組アルバム『DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER』(1977年)、チャールズ・ミンガスとのコラボレーションによって生まれた『MINGUS』(1979年)、そして『SHADOWS AND LIGHT』(1980年)というライヴ・アルバムを通し、その革新的なまでのスタイルをより明確な形で世界に提示していった。この時期の作品群が持つスリルと興奮を現代に再び表現すべく、この時代をより深く掘り下げていく作品が、今回リリースされるこの『JONI MITChELL ARCHIVES, VOL. 4: THE ASYLUM YEARS (197601980)』なのだ。

◆グラミー賞受賞歴を誇るこのジョニ・ミッチェル・アーカイヴ・シリーズは、未開拓の地ともいうべき彼女の膨大なアーカイヴの中から、ジョニ本人のヴィジョンとパーソナルな手法によって編纂されたレア音源集だ。このシリーズの第四弾となる今作は、6枚組CDボックスに加え、その中に収録されている楽曲の中から厳選された曲を4枚のアナログ盤に編集した『JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES, VOL. 4 HIGHLIGHTS: THE ASYLUM YEARS (197601980)』という4枚組アナログ盤という2形態でのリリースとなり、両ヴァージョンともに、未発表の貴重な写真やジョニ・ミッチェルの長年の友人でもあるキャメロン・クロウとが深く語り合った対談をまとめ上げたライナーノーツを掲載したブックレットが同梱されている。このキャメロン・クロウとの率直な会話を通して、ジョニは、今回編纂される1976年から1980年までの5年間にわたる創作活動の中でおきた私的なエピソードや想い出、物語などを共有してくれているのだ。

◆彼女の輝かしいキャリアの中でも最も多作な時期となる、70年代後半という期間を網羅するこの重要なボックス・セット。今までのアーカイヴ・シリーズ同様、数々の貴重な音源が収録されているのだが、その中でも今回特筆すべき音源は、ボブ・ディランが開催したローリング・サンダー・レヴューに帯同した1975年のパフォーマンスや、1976年の全米ツアーでのパフォーマンスなど、顔の徐の力強いライヴ音源だろう。また、今作は他にも『HEJIRA』や『DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER』、そして『MINGUS』というアルバムのレコーディング・セッション時の貴重な初期音源やオルタネイト・テイクなどを多数収録している他、ブレッド&ローゼズ・フェスティヴァル出演時のパフォーマンス音源や、反原発集会に参加した際のパフォーマンス音源なども網羅している。

◆さらに、今作には1979年のツアーの模様も記録されており、そこにはそのツアーの貴重なリハーサル音源も収録されているのだ。いうまでもなく、このリハーサルやツアーにはハービー・ハンコックやジャコ・パストリアス、ウェイン・ショーターやパット・メセニーといった錚々たるメンバーが参加しており、ジョニ・ミッチェルというアーティストの多彩な才能、そして柔軟性を存分に窺うことができる内容となっている。
