The Cologne band Schmitz & Niebuhr has recorded a groundbreaking prog rock concept album titled "Porz 1975." Porz? Today, the largest district of the city of Cologne, a city with a population of one million, and an independent city until 1975, where the musicians grew up and some of whom still live. Dogma: Only instruments – electronic, electric, and acoustic – that already existed in 1975 were used. One piece for each of the 16 Porz districts at the time. OK, with the intro and outro (marching band!), that makes 18. Therefore, two LPs were needed and the wonderful C-90 cassette tape was reactivated. Guitar solos are allowed, but without... You know the drill. PORZ 1975 is an acoustic road movie through the 1970s. A decade characterized by inventiveness, compositional daring, and the trust that listeners would take time for music. The concept album also outlines the trauma of municipal reform – the resulting upheavals and twists are reflected on a musical level, and the 16-page booklet provides insight into this. The double album – full of references to art pop and progressive rock – also works on its own. Lavishly instrumented, expansive improvisations are few and far between, and the songs are wittily composed and arranged.
