The 60s legends and their prodigal leader need no introduction, and many of their interpretations of these cuts are classics of their era, but these earlier renditions shed new light on the material for any appreciator of Wilson s oeuvre. From The Kingston Trio s take on The Wreck of The John B , the inspiration for an almost inconceivable 24 hour burst of creativity from Wilson at the height of his powers, to The Dell Vikings Come Go With Me and Little Willie John s Talk To Me , both of which were covered during the band smuch overlooked late 70s period - each track is a thing of beauty in its own right, and demonstrates that Wilson s talent for judgingmaterial for his group to tackle almost equalled his talent for original material. Almost... Tracks featured were included on no less than thirteen Beach Boys albums, including Pet Sounds , Surfin USA , Beach Boys Today! , 15 BigOnes , MIU , LA (Light Album) , 20/20 , Party and the phenomenal Surf sUp . Also included are a track reworked for (American) Spring s self-titled sole LP (produced by Wilson and featuring his wife and her family) and a cut recorded by the band for the Party! album but dropped from the final running order. This collection of doo-wop, rock n roll, reworked traditionals, slow dances and plantations songs demonstrates in itself the huge well of American songcraft drawn on by the group, and the wide range of music which interested them and appealed in the years before stardom struck. Compiled by Cherry Red s own in-house Beach Boys nut, and packaged with detailed song by song liner notes and exclusive artwork from the achingly handsome PeanutSnake, this collection promises to appeal to the huge Beach Boys fanbase, including both younger fans and those old enough to remember these originals. It constitutes the latest instalment in our ongoing interest in exploring the world of one of the greatest bands of all time, following as it does last year s reissue of Murry Wilson s Many MoodsOf... album (CDMRED393).
