Previously known for a string of buzzing solo releases on fellow Italian producer and close comrade Clap!Clap!’s Black Acre Records, Khalab has developed an international reputation for his fusion of tribal drums, deep bass work, and heavily layered & dense electronic textures. It was a natural evolutionary branch to collaborate with multi-instrumentalist Sissoko (regarded as the undisputed master of the original talking drum - the tamani), who had been living in Italy and conducting prolific career, collaborating with the likes of Ibrahim Ferrer, Buena Vista Social Club, Don Moye and Art Ensemble of Chicago, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Oumou Sangare, Toots Thielemans, Toumani Diabate, Ballake Sissoko, and many others. The sound of the self titled Khalab & Baba album is at once both entirely new while remaining familiar for both avid listeners of electronic music and traditional African sounds. The influence of Amadran, a repetitive and hypnotic musical structure typically found in Malian music gets re-translated in the studio by Khalab to great effect in tracks like “Nana” with it’s repetitious percussion loops, encroaching synth drones, and four to the floor beat. Tracks like “Bognya” and “Magny” with it’s stuttering drums, wailing vocals, and bass growls become more immediate, while “Tata”, “Ko Djodo” and “Lenke” show restraint with a few minimal touches, resting on the traditional sounds and building around Baba Sissoko’s unmistakeable voice and musical talent. Their reputation at home allowed them to work with two of the top traditional musicians in the city in what would be their last recorded performance: vocalists Pepe Vasquez, Rosita Guzman, and Sofia Buitron as well as guitarists Roberto Arguedas and Felix Casaverde (former guitarist of chabuca Granda), in addition to members of the live band. For the worldwide release of Karimba, Novalima partnered with USA-based ESL Records (Thievery Corporation, Nickodemus), an ad-hoc home for their fusion of traditional and future sounds. Karimba (ESL Music) has garnered astounding press accolades from NPR, Giant Step, Nat Geo Music and more, while also topping the iTunes World Music Chart and cracking the top 10 Billboard World Music Chart, since its release on Jan 2012. Balance represents a meeting of different currents that make up Buho's music: a fascination with the natural world, and its protection, a fascination with the rhythms, traditions and sounds of Latin America and a fascination with modern electronic music and production aesthetics. The album is peppered with Cumbia, Son Jarocho, Andean instrumentation & Afro-Colombian rhythms. Mixed with this, Robin integrates this idea of "nature music" - putting the sound of a misty forest, the songs of birds, of crunching leaves under foot or the rhythmic tapping of rain alongside synthesized sounds, electronic clicks or claps, deep basses. Trying at once to give them their own space but in a new, surprising perspective - it draws electronic music into something more soft, natural, different and appealing. Balance is also an album that celebrates community and collaboration, showcasing collaborations with ten different artists form Latin America and beyond, both producers, instrumentalists and singers. They were very satisfied with the result, which is raw and acoustic but at the same time electronic. Dark but soulful. Deep and haunting at times. Novalima are joined on this album by some of the finest Afro-Peruvian musicians on cajon, guitar and vocals giving every song a live feel.
