廃盤Bobby Bland, often known as Bobby Blue Bland, was one of the best blues, R&B and soul singers of the post-war era, recognised as one of the finest interpreters of blues-influenced songs, comparable within his genre to the likes of Frank Sinatra in the broader popular spectrum. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame described him as second in stature only to B.B. King as a product of Memphis's Beale Street blues scene. 廃盤Sam Cooke is widely recognised as the pioneer of soul music, creating the crossover between R&B and pop during the late 50s and hugely influential as both a performer and songwriter. 廃盤The Soul Stirrers were one of the most important and influential of the gospel quartets, their career spanning many decades, and their style helping to shape secular doowop and soul music in the post-war decades. This collection focuses on a key decade or more in their career, during which the great soul singer Sam Cooke was a member of the group, not only learning his own trade as a vocalist, but also making a highly distinctive contribution to the groups sound. He was succeeded in the group after he went solo in 1957, by another future major soul start Johnnie Taylor, who contributes to the later titles on the collection. This great value 54-track 2-CD set includes the A and B sides of all the Specialty singles released during the period plus the A and B sides of their releases on Sam Cookes own SAR label through 1960 and into 1961 accommodating as many as we could within the 2-CD format. 廃盤Little Walter Jacobs was blues harmonica player, singer, songwriter and occasional guitarist who revolutionised the way that the harmonica was played and recorded, bringing a new dimension to the blues during the 1950s. He was one of the first artists to amplify his harmonica by holding it to a microphone and maybe the first artist on any instrument deliberately to use electronic distortion as part of his range of sounds. He was a member of Muddy Waters band, appearing on many of his records during the 1950s, but from 1952 recorded for the Chess subsidiary Checker, his releases regularly featuring a harmonica-led instrumental on one side and a vocal performance on the others. He scored an R&B No. 1 with his first solo single Juke, and another one a few years later with what became a staple of blues bands the world over My Babe. Little Walter became the only harmonica player to be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame. 廃盤Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup was a Mississippi Delta blues guitarist, singer and noted songwriter who was often known as The Father of Rock 'n' Roll, because even in the early '40s he was playing in a style which unmistakeably provided many of the essential roots of the musical revolution that was still more than a decade distant. He wrote classic songs like That's All Right Mama, which became Elvis Presley's first commercial recording, and other songs covered by Elvis like My Baby Left Me. He was a vital bridge between acoustic country blues and the electrified urban sound he developed after he hoboed his way to Chicago, and was among the first blues artists to play with bass and drums accompaniment. 廃盤Bo Diddley, also known as Ellas McDaniel, was one of the most distinctive and influential artists in the transition of popular music from blues and R&B through to rock n roll during the 1950s. His music was best-known for his use of the guitar riff based on the 3/2 clave, sometimes known as shave and a haircut, two bits, and it was a motif taken up by many artists after he popularised it with his early hits. Although he did not have a huge number of hits, his songs, such as Im A Man, Pretty Thing, Who Do You Love and Mona have inspired and been recorded by a huge number of artists. 廃盤Nancy Wilson is one of the finest vocalists to emerge in the post-war era to take over the mantle of great jazz, cabaret and pop singers such as Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee, and compete with them on their own terms. Achieving her early recognition in the era when the long-playing stereo album was becoming a universal format, she was always primarily an album artist, especially with her focus being as much on jazz and easy listening as the pure pop market, although she had chart success in the pop, R&B and adult contemporary markets from the '60s through to the '90s. This collection takes a thorough look at the formative years of her career, comprising as it does her complete performances on five LPs - Like In Love, recorded in 1956 when she was just 19, Something Wonderful, The Swinging's Mutual with jazz pianist George Shearing, the equally jazz-oriented Nancy Wilson With Cannonball Adderley, and Hello Young Lovers. 廃盤Smiley Lewis was one of the unluckiest artists to emerge during the R&B era of the early '50s and the formative years of rock 'n' roll, overshadowed as he was by another R&B star from New Orleans, Fats Domino, which meant he played second fiddle to Domino throughout his career, and even saw some of his biggest hits and best-known songs, such as I Hear You Knocking, One Night and Shame Shame Shame, covered by other mainstream pop artists. He was signed to Imperial, the same label as Domino, and had the same producer, Dave Bartholomew, which exacerbated his slightly secondary status, and his chart profile was relatively modest, but over the years he consistently recorded some fine blues and R&B material in the distinctive New Orleans style and was considerably more influential than his roster of hits would indicate. This great value 60-track 2-CD set collection comprises the A sides of all his Imperial releases, along with almost all the B sides, plus one of his early 1947 singles for the De Luxe label. 廃盤Jimmy Reed was a hugely influential figure of the blues and R&B scene during the 1950s and early 60s, not only for the fact that he brought his distinctive style of electric blues to mainstream audiences, but also because in the process he inspired many aspiring talents on both sides of the Atlantic, notably The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Van Morrison, who all recorded versions of various Jimmy Reed R&B hits. He came to prominence in the early 50s when he was one of the first artists to sign to VeeJay, and over the years scored around twenty Top 20 R&B hits, with a dozen or more pop chart entries as well, underlining his importance as a crossover artist.
