40年代半ばからウディ･ハーマン楽団で活躍、1956年にはSavoyにケニー･クラークとの共演盤を残した知性派アルト奏者のジョン･ラポータ(1920-2004)。これはそのラポータが、1954年から55年にかけて、チャールズ･ミンガスとマックス･ローチが主宰したDebutレーベルに残した全録音を集大成、さらに1956年から57年にかけて録音されたFantasyへのリーダー録音を追加した豪華版です。CD1の全20曲とCD2の5曲目までは初リーダー作の｢John LaPorta Quintet｣(Debut DLP10)と、｢Three Moods｣(Debut DEB122)から。CD2の6曲目以降がボーナス･トラックで、セプテット編成の｢Conceptions｣(Fantasy LP3-228)と、｢The Clarinet Artistry Of John LaPorta｣(Fantasy LP3-248)からトリオ録音を抜粋しています。レニー･トリスターノの影響を受けたクールな音色、知的に抑制されたラポータの世界を満喫できる2枚組です。全40曲、154分収録。（jazzyell107号10ページより転載）
