1940年代前半に突如巻き起こった“ニューオリンズ・リヴァイヴァル”現象の中で、最大の事件は「ジョージ・ルイスの“発見”」だったのではないでしょうか。第2 次大戦でのストーリーヴィル封鎖をきっかけにジャズの中心がシカゴ、そしてニューヨークへと移っていったとき、そのままニューオリンズに留まったミュージシャンたちは、港湾労働などで暮らしを立てつつ何とか演奏家としての腕を保っていきましたが、彼らの活動は“ニューオリンズ・リヴァイヴァル”が起こるまでこの都市の外ではほとんど知られることなく、ルイスの名も、40 年代に“発見”されたことでようやく広まることになったのでした。その後、ルイスのトラッド・ジャズは多くのファンを獲得し、63 年には初めて日本へもやってきてファンを喜ばせましたが、これは、そんなルイスが1954 年に録音した最高傑作『ジャズ・アット・オハイオ・ユニオン』をCD2枚に、1953年と54年にサン・フランシスコやニューオリンズで残した録音をCD5 枚に、そして59 年にコペンハーゲンで当地のトラッド・バンドと共演した録音をCD1 枚に収めた8 枚組。これらをじっくりお聴きいただければ、ニューオリンズ・ジャズの、またジョージ・ルイスの魅力とは何なのかがすべておわかりいただけることでしょう。(新譜案内より)
