ポール・ロブスン(本名ポール・リロイ・バスティル・ロブスン、1898年4月9日、米国ニュージャージー州プリンストン生まれ、1976年1月23日、ペンシルベニア州フィラデルフィア死去)は、著名なアメリカの歌手、俳優、黒人活動家でした。

牧師の父のもとに生まれたロブスンは、ニュージャージー州ニューブランズウィックのラトガース大学に入学し、全米代表のフットボール選手でした。ラトガース大学を首席で卒業した後、プロのスポーツ選手になる道を断り、コロンビア大学法科大学院に入学。1923年に法律の学位を取得しましたが、黒人が法律の専門職に就く機会が少なかったため、舞台の道に転向し、1922年にロンドンでデビュー。劇作家ユージン・オニールを擁するニューヨークの劇団プロビンスタウン・プレイヤーズに入団し、1924年にオニールの劇「神の子らには翼がある」に出演。その後、「皇帝ジョーンズ」の主役を演じ、ニューヨーク(1924年)とロンドン(1925年)でセンセーションを巻き起こしました。また、同劇の映画版(1933年)にも主演しました。

ロブスンは素晴らしいバスバリトンの歌声を持ち、20以上の言語を学びました。1925年、ニューヨーク市グリニッチビレッジで初めてアフリカ系アメリカ人の霊歌を朗読し、ミュージカル「ショウボート」のジョー役で「オール・マン・リバー」を歌い、世界的に有名になりました。彼が主役を演じたロンドンでの『オセロ』(1930年)の演技は高く評価され、それはブロードウェイでの上演(1943年)でも同様でブロードウェイでのシェイクスピア劇としては史上最高の興行成績を樹立しました。

さらに1925年から1961年の間に、ロブスンは約276曲をリリース。その多くは複数回録音されました。その最初の曲は、1925年に「Were You There」をバックに収録した黒人霊歌「Steal Away」でした。彼の録音レパートリーは、アメリカーナ、ポピュラースタンダード、クラシック音楽、ヨーロッパのフォークソング、政治歌、詩、演劇の朗読など、さまざまなスタイルに及びました。

1939年に移住先からアメリカに戻り、第二次世界大戦下のアメリカと連合国の戦争努力を支持しました。しかし一方で、公民権運動と親ソ連政策を支持したことはFBIの調査の対象となりました。
1949年8月27日、公民権会議のチャリティーとして企画されたコンサートがニューヨーク州ピークスキルのすぐ北にあるレイクランドエーカーズで開催される予定でしたが、ロブスンが到着する前に地元の反共産主義者の群衆が野球のバットや石でコンサート参加者を襲撃。地元警察は数時間後に到着したものの、介入する気配はほとんどありませんでした。13人が重傷を負い、ロブスンもリンチされ、隣接する丘の斜面では十字架が燃やされました。9月4日に延期して開催されたコンサートの後、ピークスキル地区からのKKK(アメリカの白人至上主義)会員の申し込みが748人に上りました。
その後ロブスンはハーレムに移り、1950年から1955年にかけてアメリカの政策を批判する「フリーダム」という定期刊行物を出版しました。

1950年から共和党員マッカーシー政権時代には、ロブスンのパスポートは取り消され、レコードは店頭から消え、彼の名前はブラックリストに載せられ、米国での公演は禁止。しかし国際委員会が結成され、特に英国へのロブスンの旅行の自由を要求。1957年5月、英国下院議員らはロンドンのセント・パンクラス・タウンホールで電話による「国際」コンサートを企画。1958 年に米国最高裁判所の判決により、彼はようやくアメリカを離れることを許されました。その後1960年代初頭に引退し、フィラデルフィアで余生を過ごしました。

ロブスンは若きハリー・ベラフォンテの指導者でした。ベラフォンテは 1950 年代初頭に最も人気のある黒人エンターテイメントスターの1人になりましたが、アフリカ系アメリカ人の公民権運動の主役でもあり、芸術的にも政治的にもロブスンに言及しました。

1925年にVictor Talking Machineで録音された最初の作品から、1958年にColumbia Masterworks へ録音したライブまで、彼の録音遺産を1つのエディションにまとめた初めてのコレクションです。
